French 75 Cocktail Recipe

The French 75 was first printed in 1927 and was supposedly named after a famous field gun used during World War I. The French 75 isn’t a very strong cocktail, but it’s so light and refreshing – with the gin’s herbal flavors and the Champagne’s grape flavors complementing each other so beautifully – that you may be tempted to finish it quickly. Here is a way to make a French 75 Cocktail recipe.

Do you know what the French 75 is?

The French 75 is a punchy sparkling gin cocktail that is both refreshing and citrusy. It’s ideal for holiday celebrations and other special occasions. When you want a bubbly drink, the French 75 is the way to go! Best easy-to-make French 75 cocktail recipe dressed up in a sparkling dress, made with a regular pour of gin and topped with Champagne. It was named after the French 75-mm field gun, which saw widespread use during World War I.

Ingredients & Tips for 75 French Dishes:

Syrup (simple):

You’ll need to make easy syrup on the burner, which will take less than 5 minutes if you’re using honey or sugar (if you try using straight honey in a cold cocktail, it will seize up). Make the simple syrup ahead of time and place it in the refrigerator, sealed, for up to several days, or just let it cool for a few minutes before shaking up your drinks.

Gin:

In terms of gin, you can use any regular dry gin, such as Beefeater. Instead, I went with Hendrick’s, which has notes of cucumber and rose. If you’re going to the store for French 75 supplies, I will go with Hendrick’s (I’m not a fan of the juniper-forward gins).

75 Variations in French:

Don’t forget my Clementine French 75 and Earl Grey French 75 for more inventive takes on the classic French 75. In my cookbook, you’ll also enjoy the Elderflower Champagne Cocktail.

Composition of the Ingredients:

  • 1 12 oz. gin
  • 34 oz. new lemon juice (approximately 34 medium lemons)
  • 34 oz clear syrup (recipe follows)
  • chilled Champagne (about 2 to 3 ounces) (enough to top the glass)
  • Lemon peel to use as a garnish
  • Syrup (simple) (yields enough for five cocktails, scale as necessary)
  • a quarter cup of honey or sugar
  • 14 cups of water

Easy to Make French 75 Cocktail Recipe:

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the honey (or sugar) and water to create the simple syrup. Warm over medium heat, whisking periodically, until the honey or sugar has fully dissolved. Allow the pot to cool after removing it from the sun.
  2. Make a cocktail (multiple drinks can be made at once): Ice can be added to a cocktail shaker.

Combine all Ingredients:

Instead, I went with Hendrick’s, which has notes of cucumber and rose. Close the shaker tightly and shake for about 20 seconds, or until thoroughly chilled. Fill Champagne glasses halfway with the liquid and top them with Champagne.

3. To keep the shape of your lemon peel, twist it and hold it for a few seconds. Enjoy this cocktail when it’s still cold by garnishing it with a lemon twist.

Observations:

Measurement Guidelines: Three tablespoons equal 12 ounces, and 12 ounces equals 34 ounces.

Make it Vegan: Instead of honey, use vegan sugar.

Make it Gluten-Free: I find Hendrick’s Gin on a list of gluten-free gins, but you should double-check.

Change it Up:

You can use some fresh citrus juice in this recipe. It’s fun to drink clementine or blood orange juice. You might also replace the simple syrup with St. Germain elderflower liqueur (in which case, I’d use lemon as the citrus).

Only Takes on the Cocktail:

In the simple syrup, I used honey instead of sugar. The soft honey flavor complements the new lemon and herbal gin perfectly. However, if you prefer, you can stick to the original recipe and use sugar instead.

In either case, the recipe works. Pour one ounce of gin and one tablespoon of lemon juice into four champagne flutes.
